September 2003 was a very memorable time for me. I had just been appointed a Mazda main agent for West London and had invested all the funds I had into the business just as Mazda were launching a very unusual car called the RX-8. A four door coupe that some pundits described as having 2 front doors and 2 rear suicide doors and came with a 1.3 Litre rotary engine.
I remember the evening very well when Top Gear were reviewing the car. I had dozens of cars descending on me and if Top Gear give it a slating then I’m in trouble! Jeremy Clarkson walked around the car sucking through his teeth in a very negative way. However by the end of the review he said “It’s one of the best cars I have ever driven” Those words sent me running to the fridge to grab a bottle of champagne that my wife and I had been saving. The very next day the dealership phone rang off the hook with RX-8 enquiries. We hit the ground running and never looked back, selling every car we could get our hands on.
Twelve years later I wait with the same anxious feeling as I did back then. This Sunday, March the 8th, Top Gear will be reviewing the All New 2015 Mazda MX-5. This car is massive for us dealers. The MX-5 has been the world’s best selling sports car for over 20 years. Every model produced has won awards around the globe because it is fantastic. For me they have been a pleasure to sell for 2 great reasons. Firstly they give the owners so much pleasure and secondly, for us dealers they are faultless. The cars are bullet proof when it comes to reliability and durability. We have customers part exchanging cars that have never been serviced and they run like new cars. My salesman can say “hand on heart” this car is fantastic and will give you no problems. What it will give you, is many years and miles of pleasure. And when you are done with it we would like it back as the re-sale value is one of the highest in the business.

Next Sunday is a big day for us. It’s all been kept top secret, we do not know if it is Richard Hammond, James May or Jeremy Clarkson who has reviewed the car. All we know is that it was done in Spain three weeks ago. Rumour has it Richard Hammond has already ordered a car so that’s positive, however with Top Gear you never know. For years they have always praised the MX-5 so they could very easily and controversially attack its green credentials. Who knows what they are going to say so make sure you watch. Top Gear 8pm Sunday the 8th of March. Not sure I can cope with the suspense!
