A few weeks back, we reported that the Mazda MX-5 was in the running for World Car of the Year, and we are happy to relay the news that the MX-5 ended up scooping the award at the ceremony, which took place during the New York Motor Show.
And that's not all, the Mazda MX-5 also took home the prize for Best Design, making it a joyous double for the Japanese manufacturer.
The news came as a surprise to many critics, who are accustomed to seeing the big German manufacturers - such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes - take home the gongs. The wins are recognition of the superb performance and design possessed by the Mazda, which has come close to winning the awards - voted for by 70 jurors - on several occasions in the past.
The fourth generation two-seater beat off stiff competition from the Audi A4 and Mercedes GLC SUV in the overall category, while beating the Jaguar XE in the race for Best Car Design, as well as another Mazda, the CX-3! This is not just a historic achievement in the context of the history of the Mazda, but is a landmark for the worldwide motor industry - no car has ever won the overall and design prize in the same year.
Summing up the reasons the MX-5 took two awards home, World Car Awards chairman Peter Lyon told Forbes: "There isn’t one aspect in which this new fourth-generation MX-5 fails to surpass its predecessor. It’s shorter, lighter, more spacious and better laid out. Its fresher, sharper-looking styling takes the coupé in a whole new direction. It’s faster, more economical and even more engaging to drive than before."
We can now expect to see a surge in demand for the MX-5 on British soil, with discerning drivers keen to get their hands on the 'world champion' vehicle.
