The brand new special edition Mazda MX-5 Icon proved a hit at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed during the weekend of 23-26 June, wowing visitors from near and far with its impressive technical specifications and sleek, stylish, sporty aesthetic.
The Icon edition of the popular MX-5 is loosely modelled on the 131ps SE-L Nav and becomes the first fourth-generation special edition MX-5 to feature a SKYACTIV-G 1.5 litre engine.
The car was unveiled in Mazda’s "Raise The Roof" live music arena at the event, with a host of other MX-5 models making their European debut, including the MX-5 RF, the MX-5 Speedster and MX-5 Spyder concept car. As a testament to the popularity of the MX-5, Mazda also had the one-millionth model off the production line on display.
The MX-5 Icon is available in a choice of two striking colours – Crystal White Pearlescent or Meteor Grey Mica. In contrast to these relatively neutral colours, the vehicle boasts metallic Soul Red wing mirrors. In addition to this, the Icon also features a sleek rear spoiler, optional side-stripe decals and a front skirt. This stand-out look is further enhanced by impressive 16" gun-metal alloy wheels.
Equipment-wise, the MX-5 Icon is pure luxury, with black leather seats, dusk-sense lighting, rain-sense wipers and rear parking sensors for added safety and security.
When it comes to price, the Icon is hard to fault. At £20,995 on-the-road it offers power, luxury and value for the price tag. Given that Mazda have shifted a whopping 120,000 MX-5’s since its launch in 1990, it’s safe to say that there will be plenty of eager fans waiting to get their hands on this latest update to a truly modern classic. At present, there are just 600 available in the UK, which will no doubt prompt quick sales for those wishing to get their hands on an Icon before it sells out.
