Arriving nine years after the first, the second generation 2017 Mazda CX-9 launched this week in Los Angeles. While it may not look overly different to its predecessor, the 2017 Mazda CX-9 adds a touch of sophistication to the small crossover, with sexy lines and sporty handling that has become synonymous with the Mazda brand.
Arriving in dealerships in spring 2016, the 2017 CX-9 has all the styling that we have come to expect - a shield-like grill, narrow headlights and a luxurious interior. The devil is in the detail and with some cosmopolitan touches, Mazda has successfully elevated the feel of the CX-9 with the introduction of wooden accents, a handsome auburn Nappa-leather interior and colour in the gauges. It doesn't stop in the interior however; with chrome accents and the Machine Grey exterior (officially the colour of Mazda), the 2017 CX-9 is elevated to status symbol.
But of course, beauty is only skin deep and not only is the 2017 CX-9 a thing to behold, it is now onboard with Mazda's philosophy of engine design - greater performance and reduced fuel consumption. The first generation CX-9 was the last of Mazda's vehicles not to wear the SkyActiv label. The 2017 CX-9 bids farewell to the old V6 and introduces a four-cylinder, turbocharged, 250 horsepower, Skyactiv-G 2.5T engine... and don't let us forget about 310 lb-ft of torque.
If this isn't enough to get your juices flowing, it's probably worth mentioning that this new turbocharged engine boasts a 20% increase in fuel economy. Clearly, the diet is working - the 2017 CX-9 is also a whopping 297 lbs lighter than its older model.
The sticker-price is yet to be announced, but what we have come to expect from Mazda is that it won't break the bank. With the upscale look-and-feel and turbocharged engine, this might be one family vehicle where you consider leaving the family at home!
