All-new Mazda2 wins 2008 World Car of the Year Award

All-new Mazda2 wins 2008 World Car of the Year Award

  • The Mazda2 has been voted the 2008 World Car of the Year (WCOTY).

From an initial entry list of thirty-nine (39) new vehicles from all over the world, the 2008 WCOTY title was announced on Thursday, March 20, 2008 at the New York International Auto Show. The Mazda2 edged out the Ford Mondeo and Mercedes-Benz C-Class to take the overall award.

Based on the recommendations of a design panel consisting of four highly respected world design experts, the Mazda2 was also voted by the jurors onto the short-list of top three design finalists, together with the Audi R8 and Volvo C30.

The WCOTY awards were officially launched in January 2004 and are organised and conducted by automotive journalists from all over the world. A jury of 47 international automotive journalists selected the overall winner by secret ballot, based on their experience with each candidate as part of their professional work. The jury members constitute a balance of representation from Asia, Europe, North America, South America, as well as other parts of the world.

Since it first went on sale in 2003, the Mazda2 has enjoyed widespread popularity due to its convenient size and superb storage and functionality. The second generation all-new Mazda2 was introduced in Japan in July 2007, and soon gained popularity thanks to its fun-to-drive attributes and the emphasis Mazda placed on the new generation`s level of environmental and safety engineering coupled to great design. The all-new Mazda2 reflects these emerging modern attitudes with stylish exterior design complemented by low running costs and excellent fuel economy, achieved by reducing the vehicle`s weight by approximately 100 kilograms.

"We are delighted that the 2008 World Car of the Year jury has chosen the all-new Mazda2 as their World Car of the Year," said Dan Morris, Mazda`s senior managing executive officer in charge of Marketing, Sales and Customer Service. "This is wonderful recognition which Mazda2 car owners and Mazda employees alike can celebrate worldwide."

    Mazda Furai

Three-rotor engine produces 450bhp, while huge rear wing provides downforce
This is the Furai, an amazing looking supercar that’s sure to draw massive crowds with its stunning lines and high-performance mid-mounted rotary engine.

Translating to ‘sound of wind’, the Furai is the fifth model to demonstrate Mazda’s new design direction, which was kicked off with the Nagare sports car at the 2006 Los Angeles Motor Show. Although officially a design study for now, elements of the Furai’s styling could be seen on forthcoming Mazda coupés, such as the next-generation RX-8.

At the front, the Furai gets a development of the same sweeping nose seen on the Taiki concept – a model which debuted at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show – and features a smooth silhouette of Mazda’s corporate grille. Simple flowing lines run from its edges to the top of the wheelarches, while the stacked headlights and air intakes on either side are divided by neat vanes.

The sweeping look is continued by a large jet fighter-style canopy and deep air intakes ahead of the rear wheels. At the back there’s a huge wing which is designed to produce plenty of downforce, dramatically curved rear wings and even more vanes on the engine cover.

The Furai was penned by Mazda’s North American design boss, Franz Von Holzhausen, and its shape was developed at the company’s styling studio in southern California in collaboration with motor racing experts at Swift Engineering.

MAZDA TO PARTICIPATE IN NORWEGIAN NATIONAL HYDROGEN PROJECT
HyNor to Purchase Fleet of Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE Cars in 2008

Mazda Motor Corporation and HyNor (Hydrogen Road of Norway) have announced they will collaborate in the development of hydrogen fuel and hydrogen vehicles.  This was formally agreed at a signing ceremony held at the Norwegian Embassy in Tokyo today (Wednesday).

His Excellency Mr Åge B Grutle, Norwegian ambassador to Japan, Mr Ulf Hafseld, chairman of HyNor, and Mr Seita Kanai, a director and senior managing executive officer of Mazda, all signed a memorandum of understanding for the collaboration and support in the development of a Hydrogen Economy.

The memorandum states that HyNor intends to purchase a total of 30 Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE vehicles commencing in the summer 2008.  These will be the first hydrogen vehicles sold by Mazda outside Japan.

“I very much welcome the agreement between Mazda Motor Corporation and HyNor.  The agreement illustrates that HyNor’s efforts to contribute to the development of hydrogen-based technologies are recognised by Mazda as a major global actor in this field,” said H.E. Mr Åge Grutle, Norway’s ambassador to Japan.

“The partnership between HyNor and Mazda is also very encouraging for Norway’s broader efforts to strengthen its cooperation with Japan in promoting research and technologies within the context of climate change mitigation, including a Hydrogen Society.  For the Norwegian embassy it is a top priority to support these efforts, working in close collaboration with Innovation Norway and the Research Council of Norway.”

The chairman of HyNor, Ulf Hafseld, commented: “HyNor is very pleased to sign this agreement with Mazda and we think this cooperation will speed up the process of introducing hydrogen as a zero-emission fuel.

“By using the internal combustion engine as a feasible technology to accelerate realisation of the real hydrogen world, we can develop a hydrogen infrastructure much faster.  HyNor is focusing on a carbon neutral infrastructure, and using hydrogen in the Mazda cars will ensure a complete carbon free line of fuel.”

Mr Seita Kanai, Mazda’s director and senior managing executive officer in charge of Research and Development, stated: “This will be the first time a Hydrogen RE vehicle will be sold outside Japan and will be a big step in Mazda’s hydrogen vehicle development history.

“Perhaps Norway is one of the countries closest to the realisation of a hydrogen energy society.  By cooperating with HyNor and jointly supporting the development of a hydrogen economy, we hope that Mazda will be able to contribute to the establishment of a Hydrogen society.”

HyNor is a unique Norwegian joint industry initiative to demonstrate real life implementation of a hydrogen energy infrastructure along a route of 580 kilometres from Oslo to Stavanger in Norway.

The project comprises all steps required to develop a Hydrogen society adapted to local conditions.  The joint project is planning for various means of transport – buses, taxis and private cars – and varying types of transport systems: urban, inter-city, regional and even long-distance national transport.

In August 2006, Mazda attended a ceremony which commemorated the opening of Norway’s first hydrogen filling station created by HyNor.  This was also the occasion of the first on-road demonstration of a Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE vehicle outside Japan.

    SUBARU WINS TOP GREEN AWARD

    The exciting Subaru R1e

Subaru’s pioneering work with electric vehicles has attracted a top award from Japan’s Minister of the Environment for helping prevent global warming.  Parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, received the ‘2006 Commendation For Global Warming Prevention Activity’ award.

Subaru’s 2+2 city car is light, efficient and ideal for metropolitan use with a battery which can be recharged in 15 minutes.

The Subaru R1e has a 50 mile range and can be initially charged for eight hours at home then fast-charged at a supermarket, ECO station or local hospital.

The car has a 62 mph top speed, weighs just 870 kg and produces 54 PS at 6,000 rpm from its electric motor, while the battery life is at least 10 years or 124,000-plus miles.

Significantly, one of the advantages of the Subaru R1e is its fuel efficiency. Daytime charging costs are half that of a typical hybrid car and if cheaper night-time electricity is used, recharging is a staggering one-fifth less than for a hybrid.
